Then y Gómez se proclaman Campeón y subcampeón en Torneo de Surf Caribeño en Cuba
Los surfistas dominicanos Edwin Then y Júnior Gómez conquistaron el primer y segundo lugar del Open Bodyboard y Open Surfing, en el torneo caribeño que se llevó a cabo del 4 al 8 de febrero de 2010, en la vecina isla de Cuba.
El campeonato “Project Cuba For The Love of Surf 2010” lo organizó la Asociación Panamericana de Surf (PASA), cuyo objetivo es comenzar a promover el desarrollo del surf competitivo en países caribeños, los cuales poseen condiciones naturales ideales para la práctica de este deporte.
Edwin Then, procedente de Nagua, se coronó Campeón en la división Body Board Open, frente a los surfistas Frank Gonzáles y Guillermo Torres de Cuba, quienes obtuvieron segundo y tercer lugar en esta justa. Lestor Pino de Barbados quedó en cuarto lugar.
Then es local de playa El Broke en Nagua, la cual tiene fama de ser uno de los beach breaks más tubulares y potentes de la isla.
Júnior Gómez, procedente de Río San Juan, estuvo batallando en la final de la Open Surfing contra surfistas de Barbados, Cuba y Jamaica, obteniendo al final la corona de subcampeón frente a Icah Willmot de Jamaica. La tercera posición le tocó a Humberto Rodríguez de Cuba.
Gómez, Atleta del año 2009 y 2007, actualmente se mantiene involucrado en los torneos nacionales que organiza la Federación Dominicana de Surf (FEDOSURF), destacándose siempre entre los primeros lugares. En el 2007 representó a la República Dominicana en los Juegos Panamericanos de Surf celebrados en Iquique, Chile.
Júnior, del equipo de Rip Curl y local de Playa Grande, junto a su hermano Danny, en la década de los 90 fueron Selección Nacional durante varios años, teniendo ambos una gran pasión por el mar desde niños. El sobrino de Júnior e hijo de Danny, “Derek” actualmente es competidor del Circuito Nacional de Surf organizado por FEDOSURF, en la categoría Junior Surfing.
A cargo de esta brillante iniciativa de intercambio isleño estuvo la señora Maile Aguerre y el señor Juca de Barro, Presidenta y Vice-Presidente de la Asociación Panamericana de Surf (PASA). Quienes también hicieron la entrega de premios a los ganadores de las distintas categorías y modalidades.

DOMINICAN SURFERS SCORE TOP RANKINGS AT CARIBBEAN SURF TOURNAMENT IN CUBA
SANTO DOMINGO (February 17, 2010) -- Surfer Júnior Gómez of Rio San and Body boarder Edwin Then of Nagua scored top placement in their categories at the Caribbean Surf Tournament in Cuba, February 4-8, 2010, an event organized by the Pan American Surf Association (PASA).
Junior Gómez won second place in the Open Surf category and Edwin Then scored a first place win in the Open Bodyboard category. The athletes’ trip to the neighboring island of Cuba was sponsored by FEDOSURF.
The championship in Cuba, “Project For The Love of Surf 2010”, was organized by the Pan American Surf Association (PASA), whose goal is to promote the development of competitive surfing in Caribbean countries, which have ideal natural conditions for practicing the sport.
Dominican Júnior Gómez competed in the final heat of the Open Surfing against surfers from Barbados, Cuba and Jamaica. First place in the Open Surf category was won by Jamaican Icah Willmot and third place by Umberto Rodríguez of Cuba.
Gómez was awarded Athlete of the Year in 2007 and 2009, by the Dominican Olympic Committee. He currently remains involved in national tournaments organized by the Dominican Surfing Federation (FEDOSURF), always ranking among the top five. In 2007, Gómez represented the Dominican Republic at the Pan American Surfing Championships in Iquique, Chile. Additionally, Gómez is an active member of the national Rip Curl team and a local at one of the top waves of the Island, “Playa Grande”.
Edwin Then, from Nagua, was crowned champion in the Open Body Board division, along with surfers Frank Gonzales and Guillermo Torres of Cuba, who won second and third place; Pine Lestor of Barbados was ranked fourth.
Edwin Then practices his sport in Nagua which has a reputation for being one of the most tubular and powerful beach breaks of the island.
Presiding over the event and presenting awards were Mrs. Maile Aguerre and Mr. Juca de Barros, President and Vice-President of the Pan American Surf Association (PASA.
