Cabarete, Dominican Republic (March 10, 2010) – The Dominican Surfing Federation (FEDOSURF) had the pleasant opportunity of welcoming members of Waves of Health to Cabarete the first weekend in March, after they completed their third medical mission to the underserved frontier town of Dajabon, Dominican Republic, which borders Haiti. Working along with local doctors, Waves of Health provided medical care and supplies to residents from the most impoverished sections within the town and surrounding communities, and assisted victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti.

Waves of Health is an American nonprofit organization, which was founded by surfing physicians and is dedicated to helping bring modern medical care to developing communities. The visiting group of almost thirty doctors, pharmacists and medical students spent the weekend in Cabarete after their seven-day mission in Dajabon and Haiti. Members of FEDOSURF, including North Coast Technical Director Jesmarin Puente, and professional surfing coach Jochy Bueno provided surfing lessons to some of the doctors and medical students belonging to the institution at Playa Encuentro.

FEDOSURF is very grateful for the tremendous contribution that Waves of Health has provided to our country, and is committed to work together with them in solidarity in the future. The Waves of Health organization has a focus on surfers’ health and sports medicine, and shares goals with the Surfers’ Medical Association (SMA) and other surf related nonprofit organizations.

The idea of providing modern medical service to underserved communities in the Dominican Republic came to light in 2007.
